William “Willie” Wright was born 1899 in Swadlincote Derbyshire, son of John and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Wright both also born Swadlincote. The 1901 Census shows the family living at Hastings Road, Church Gresley, Derbyshire: John ( a Sanitary Pipe Carrier), his wife Elizabeth and their 3 children: Sarah Ellen b. 1896; Willie b. 1899; and Gladys Maria b. 1900 (all Swadlincote). The family moved to Jacksdale before 1904 as 2 further children: Michael b. 1904 and Elsie b. 1906 are both shown as born Jacksdale on the 1911 Census when the family was living at No. 7 Laverick Road.
No military service records have been found for Willie but the 1918/19 Absent Voters Rolls show him absent with the Machine Gun Corps (service number 106469) and his Medal Rolls Index Card shows no previous regiments or overseas postings but confirms he was awarded the British War and Victory Medals.
