Clarence was born in 1894 at Jacksdale, son of William Williams a coal miner stallman born Madeley, Shropshire and his wife Thirza (nee Stallard) born Bristol. William and Thurza married at Christchurch, Ironville on 4th November 1879. Their first child Ernest was born at Westwood in 1882 and their next child, Mary at Pye Hill, subsequent children born from 1888 onwards, namely Wilfred, Frederick, Clarence, William, Samuel Titus and Florence Anne were all born in Jacksdale. In 1911 the family was living at Great Northern Road (Pye Hill) and Clarence aged 16 was employed as a chemist’s porter.

In 1915 Clarence married Lucy Evelina Slack, ex of ‘Mill Farm’, Crich and they had a daughter Betty before the end of WW1.

It has not been possible to trace any military records for Clarence.

His father William died in 1933 and his mother Thirza in 1948, both are buried at Westwood, St. Mary’s.
