Private Sidney Frederick Waterfall

Sidney was born on 5th February 1899 at Jacksdale, son of John Waterfall a wagon maker and his wife Eliza (nee Beeby). John originated from Codnor Park and Eliza was born at Stone Row (Jacksdale Street) Jacksdale. In both 1901 and 1911 the family was living at Sedgwick Street, Jacksdale. Sidney had elder siblings named John William and Mary Eliza and younger siblings named Ivy May and Winifred Ida.
Sidney joined the Leicestershire Regiment in 1917 and served till the end of the war. He was good friend with Eric Holmes who also served in the Leicesters. Sidney and Eric had many a chat over the garden wall as Sidney’s garden on Sedgwick Street backed on to Eric’s on Main Road.
Sidney’s military records have not survived so no further information is available about his time in the services.
In 1920 he married Edith Kitson and they had a son named Kenneth. Sidney was the village milkman for many years, later living on Brinsley Hill and then retiring to a pensioner’s bungalow at Palmerston Street, Westwood. Sidney died in 1986, aged 87 years.
