Walter was born in 1896 at Nottingham son of Walter Walters, a coal miner hewer born at Codnor Park and Mary Ellen (nee Sheldon), born Codnor. In 1901 and 1911 the family was living at Cinderhill, Nottingham. Walter was the youngest of 8 children. His elder brothers and sisters were Florence Annie, James, Eliza Ann, Mary Alice, Elizabeth, Sarah Hannah and Lily. Walter was only 9 when his father died in 1905.
Walter later moved to the Jacksdale area as he is listed on the Absent Voters Roll of 1918/1919 as absent from Main Road, Jacksdale and serving with the Tank Corps. His Medal Rolls Index Card records he was recipient of the Victory & British War Medals and that he also served with the Army Service Corps.
