Private William Henry Smith

William Henry Smith was born in 1899 at Jacksdale, Notts son of Henry Smith a general labourer born Ironville and his wife Mary Ann. In 1901 and 1911 the family was living at Sedgwick Street, Jacksdale. William had siblings Dora, Minnie, Lily and George Edward. Minnie died aged 12 in 1909 and his sister Lily died in 1918 aged 15, both are buried at Westwood, St. Mary’s.
No military information has been found for William apart from a photograph of him in Sherwood Foresters’ uniform. No further family information has been forthcoming except to say that his father Henry died on 12th September, aged 65 and his mother Mary Ann died just days later on the 20th September 1932, aged 61. Both are buried at Westwood, St. Mary’s. The gravestone reads’ Re-united.’
