Fred was born in 22nd July 1893 at Pye Hill son of Isaiah Shooter a coal miner deputy born Stapleford, Notts and his wife Eliza (nee Ballad) born Codnor. His parents first set up home at Mill Lane, Codnor but by 1884 they had moved to Pye Hill. Isaiah and Eliza had 14 children in all, Mabel Ellen, Harriett, Samuel Thomas,Maud Ada, Mary Hannah, Isaiah, Eliza, Fred, Lilly, Sally, Joseph, Sarah Ann, Anne and Wilfred Rex. By 1911 nine of them had survived. In 1911 Fred, aged 17 was an electrical engineer.
Fred’s military service records have not survived but his Medal Rolls Index Card shows that he was a recipient of the British War and Victory medals.
Fred married Pattie Johnson at Mansfield in 1920 and they had sons named Kenneth and Eric.
