Charles was born in 1896 at Pye Hill, Jacksdale the son of Charles born Kilburn, Derbyshire and his wife Mary (nee Tinsley) born Bilston, Staffs. Charles’ parents married in 1879, at that time his father was an ironworks blast furnace feeder so they rented a Butterley Company cottage at Market Street, Ironville. When his father moved to Pye Hill Colliery the family moved to Pye Hill in a cottage owned by James Oakes Collieries. Charles had brothers and sisters Grace Ann, Amy, John Thomas (Jack), Elizabeth, Fanny, Lily and Robert.

Charles’ military record has not survived by his Medal Rolls Index Card indicates that he was awarded the British War and Victory medals. He is also listed on the Absent Voters Roll of 1918/1919 as being absent from Pye Hill Cottages.

Further information would be welcome.
