John was born in 1898 in Basford, Nottingham son of George Measures, a coal miner surface banksman from Newark and his wife Mary A (nee Clarke) from Kimberley, Notts. In 1911 the family was living at 1, Pit Row, Underwood. John had 4 brothers Frank Henry (Francis), George, Richard and William all 4 being born in Selston, Notts. On the night of the 1911 Census, his brother William was only 7 weeks old and a ‘monthly nurse’ named Ada  Willmott is staying overnight as a visitor. Eliza Jane Clarke, his mother’s sister aged 38 is also staying with them.

John’s Medal Rolls Index Card gives his service numbers and indicates that he was a recipient of the British War and Victory Medals.  In 1918/1919 he is listed on the Absent Voters Roll as absent from Main Road, Westwood.

In 1924 he married Annie M Bradshaw in the Basford District.  They had children, Ronald, Alfred, Vera, Margery and Eileen.

John died in 1963 in the Belper District and his wife Annie pre-deceased him in 1961.
