JONES, Robert Cecil

Private Robert Cecil Jones
Regiment Unknown

Robert Cecil Jones b. 1887 was the son of Robert Jones and Sarah Ann Astbury who both originated from Madeley, Shropshire. The family moved from Shropshire to Westwood, Notts around 1890. They lived at Old Westwood and siblings were:- Frederick Joseph b. 1885, Robert Cecil b. 1887, Reginald b. 1889 all born at Coalbrookdale, Shropshire, followed by Alfred b. 1890, Mary Ann b.1894, Elsie b. 1900 and John William b. 1902, all born at Westwood.

Robert’s father Robert, a railway plate layer and blacksmith died in 1902, aged 42 and is buried at St. Mary’s, Westwood. Robert’s mother Sarah is listed on the 1911 Census as a widow, living at Old Westwood. In 1908 Robert married Emily Mee and they are living in their own home at Westwood with children Eva aged 2 and Robert Cecil aged 9 months. Little Robert died in 1912, aged 18 months and is buried at St. Mary’s, Westwood. On the 1901 Census Robert’s occupation was given as a grocer’s assistant but by 1911 he was a grocer. In 1915 Robert and Emily had another son, Reginald F. V. named after Robert’s brother.

Robert is, we believe, the R. Jones listed on the Jacksdale War Memorial but we have been unable to discover anything about his military career. His brother Alfred George Jones also served and survived WW1 and his brother Reginald Francis Jones also served but was killed in action on 5th July 1916.
