HUBBALL, John

Private John ‘Jack’ Hubball
11090 19th Labour Company
41352 West Yorks Regiment

John Hubball was born in 1882 at Ironville son of William Hubball, an ironworks furnaceman and Emily (nee Smith) from Ironville. In 1901 the family was living at 7, Albert Street, Ironville and siblings were James, William H., Charles, Joseph, Elizabeth and Florence. John was employed as an iron puddler.

In 1911 John was living at Victoria Street, Ironville with Hannah Leighton (nee Richards), widow of Isaac Davies Leighton. Hannah was 16 years older than John, so several of her grown up Leighton children are living with them, namely George Emanuel, aged 23, John William, aged 20, Joseph Arthur 19, Florence Lizzie aged 15 and Gladys May aged 10 as well as a grand son John Davies Leighton aged 2. John Hubball was employed as a labourer at the ironworks and his three stepsons are also working at the forge.

We have no information relating to John’s military career except to say he was a recipient of the British War and Victory medals.

John died in 1957 and his partner Hannah died in 1953.
