John William Holmes was born in 1878 at Tibshelf, Derbyshire. He was the son of William Holmes and Elizabeth (nee Smart) who ran the ‘Three Horseshoes’ Public house at Bagthorpe, near Jacksdale from 1908 to 1916.
In 1900 John William married Sarah (nee Leivers) in the Basford District. In 1911 they were living at Bagthorpe with their children William, Tom and Edward. John William is employed as a coal miner hewer. Further children were born later including Clifford, Walter, Elsie, Henry and Madge.
In 1918/1919 John William was listed on the Absent Voters Roll, as absent from Sedgwick Street, Jacksdale due to service with the Notts Yeomanry. His Medal Rolls Index Card indicates that he was a recipient of the British War and Victory Medals. Little else is known of his military career.
John William died in 1956 and his wife Sarah died in 1960.
