Sapper Thomas Hill
T/2884 Royal Engineers
478480 459th Field Company, Royal Engineers
Thomas Hill was born on 4th April 1895, son of Robert Hill a general dealer and Catherine (nee Heald). He was one of 10 children born to Robert and Catherine, of whom 9 survived, Mary, Robert, Edward, William, Percy, Harry, Ida, Catherine and Tom. His elder brothers Percy and Harry are also listed on the Jacksdale War Memorial as having served and survived WW1.
In 1911 the family was living at Main Road, Jacksdale in the property which is now the dental surgery. Thomas was aged fifteen and employed as a waggon builder. In 1918/19 Tom is listed on the Absent Voters Roll, serving with 459th Field Company, Royal Engineers. We have little information regarding his military career. He served, probably in the latter years of WW1, as a conscript and was a recipient of the British War and Victory Medals.
In 1922 he married Ethel Maud Searson in the Basford District. He died in October 1984 in the Derby District.
