Wilfred, born Hoyland, Yorkshire in 1892 was the son of George Hawthorne and Ellen (nee West). His father George was a brass iron founder at the Milton Foundry, Nether Hoyland in 1891 and by 1901 was foundry manager. In 1911 George, Ellen and children have all moved to Pye Hill and George is listed as a coal miner hewer at Pye Hill colliery. Wilfred is listed on the 1911 as a colliery horse driver, below ground at Pye Hill Colliery.
George had brothers and sisters Mabel b. 1886, Walter b, 1888, George Arthur b. 1890 and Percy b. 1896. George Arthur died as an infant, aged only one year old. Walter married Mary Ann (nee Groves) and they moved back to the Barnsley District around 1914/1915. Walter died in 1925, aged only 37.
Sometime after WW1, Wilfred’s parents moved to Chapel Street, Kilburn. Wilfred’s brother Percy served during WW1 and died of his wounds on 2nd June 1918. He is commemorated on the Kilburn War Memorial. We can only assume that Wilfred remained in the Jacksdale area so that is why his service in WW1 is recorded on the Jacksdale War Memorial, which was unveiled in 1921. We have no further family information regarding Wilfred. It is possible he was Wilfred Hawthorne 15695 Northumberland Fusiliers and 76819 Tank Corps.
