GREEN, William Thomas

Private William Thomas Green
26138 16th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)

William was born in 1877/78 at Westwood, Notts and married Mary Lizzie Watchorn b. 1878 Westwood, in 1903. In 1911 William and Mary were living at Albert Avenue, Jacksdale and William’s occupation was given as a coal miner. The census states they have been married for 7 years and have had three children who have all survived, but only 2 children are at home on the night of the census, Ethel Ruth b. 1906 and Florence Mary b. 1907. It appears that the family may have moved to Rotherham as children James T. 1911, Nellie 1914 and Eva 1922 were born there.

In 1915 William volunteered, attesting for service with the Sherwood Foresters on 17th May 1915. He served in France from March to November 1916 but was discharged in 1917 due to having bronchitis and was therefore no longer fit for service. He was awarded Silver War Badge number 161830 (an accompanying pension of 10 shillings (50p) was awarded for a period of 26 weeks) as well as the British War and Victory Medals.

William died on 17th March 1950 and Mary Lizzie died on 4th December of the same year. They are both buried at Westwood, St Mary’s.

Further information would be very welcome.
