Lance Corporal Samuel Duckmanton
S/22343 Seaforth Highlanders
Samuel was born in 1896 in Jacksdale, the son of John Duckmanton, an ironworks puddler, born Tissington and Mary (nee Needham) born Golden Valley. In 1911 the family was living at New Westwood and Samuel, aged 15, was a pipe fitter’s labourer at the ironworks. Samuel was one of eleven children of whom nine survived. Siblings were John W., Henry, Annie, Thomas Leslie (who also served WW1), Florrie, Fanny, Gladys, Charles Arthur, Robert and Kate.
Although we have no specific details of Samuel’s war record, his Medal Rolls Index Card records that he was awarded both the British War and Victory Medals.
It is possible that Samuel married Mabel Butlin and that he died in 1973 in the Chesterfield District.
