DOLMAN, George Samuel Thomas

Private George Samuel Thomas Dolman
Private 54800 West Riding Regiment

George was born in 1897, son of Thomas Salt Dolman born Staffordshire and Elizabeth (nee Cox) born Flitwick. They married in 1896 in Ampthill, Beds. George was born in Flitwick, as was his sister Lily, younger sister Gertrude was born in Selston in 1901, at which time the family was living at Old Westwood, Notts.

George wasn’t called up until 21st April 1918 but he certainly travelled farther than average, serving in India for 5 days and South Africa for 236 days. His occupation at time of attestation was given as coal getter. He is recorded as having ‘good character’. He does not appear to have been awarded any medals.

In 1922 he married Florence Mason in the Basford District and they had daughters Gladys b. 1922 and Doreen b. 1928, both in Basford. George died in 1952 in Bedfordshire, aged 54, so he returned at some point to the county of his birth.

Further information would be welcome.
