Corporal William Cutts (born Walker)
98867 Machine Gun Corps
William was the adopted son of Thomas Cutts, a colliery horse keeper and his wife Ann. On the 1901 census William is living with the family at Pye Hill aged 9 but is listed as William Walker, adopted son born abt. 1892 Temple Normanton, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Thomas and Ann also had a natural son, named Robert born abt. 1883. In 1911 the family was living at Pye Hill Colliery and William’s occupation was given as tile maker for a pottery manufacturer.
We know little of his military career but his service number has been obtained from the Absent Voter’s Roll for 1918/1919 where he is listed as a Lance Corporal. The Jacksdale War Memorial and his Medal Rolls Index Card give his rank as Corporal. He was awarded the British War and Victory Medals indicating he did serve in a theatre of war.
