William Banks Cade was born in 1892 in Leeds, son of John Robert Cade, a brickyard labourer, born London Middlesex and his wife Agnes (nee Willgoose) b. Greenhills, Riddings. William had siblings, Annie, Edward, Thomas Joseph, George and Harold. Thomas Joseph was the first child to be born in this area (1906 New Westwood) after the family had moved here from Yorkshire some time before 1901, when they were living at New Westwood.

However, Harold was born (1910) at Edward Avenue, Jacksdale and the family was also listed as living at on the 1911 Census, at which time William’s occupation is listed as coal miner/ganger. He was also later employed as a pipe yard worker. The family has informed us that William also lived at 22, Albert Avenue, Jacksdale.

William married Sarah Emma Pirdue in 1913 at St. Mary’s, Westwood. The groom was aged 21 and his occupation given as ironworker, residence Edward Avenue. His spouse Sarah was aged 18, a local girl from Albert Avenue. They had children Sarah Agnes b. 1913, Elizabeth b. 1919, Robert Anthony b.1922, Betty (Lizzie) b. 1924 (who died aged only 8 weeks), Eric b. 1925, Kenneth b. 1929 and Barry b. 1936.

We have not been able to establish which regiment William served with or anything about his military career, except to say that on the Memorial he is listed as having achieved the rank of Sergeant.

William was buried at St. Mary’s, Westwood on 30th December 1970, aged 79, residence given as 22, Albert Avenue.
