Private Thomas “Tommy” Butler
Regiment Unknown
Born in 1895 Thomas was one of eleven children born to Thomas Butler an ironworker from Golden Valley and his wife Lilian (nee Revill). Siblings were Elizabeth, Myra, John Joseph, George, Hannah, Harriett, Lilian, Eric, Smith and William Henry. In 1901 the family lived at Golden Valley and by 1911 had moved to Albert Avenue, at which time Thomas was employed as a coal miner/hewer. He married Priscilla Stuart in 1918. We believe they had the following children:- Mary Lilian (b. 1918), Edwin V. (b. 1920), Thomas (b. 1926) and Stanley D. (b. 1930).
We have not been able to obtain any information regarding Thomas’s military service. There is also a J. Butler on the Jacksdale Memorial listed as served which could be his brother John Joseph.
Thomas was buried at St. Mary’s, Westwood on 6th January 1973 aged 77, home address given as 133, Palmerston Street, Westwood. The next entry in the burial register on 20th January is for his daughter Mary Lilian Butler, aged 54. His wife Priscilla died in 1977 aged 80.
We have been advised by a local resident that Thomas lived at Yew Tree Farm, Westwood before moving to Palmerston Street.
Further information would be welcome.
