BUTLER, John J.

Private John Joseph Butler
Regiment Unknown

Born about 1892 at Golden Valley, Derbyshire, John was one of eleven children born to Thomas Butler an ironworker from Golden Valley and his wife Lilian (nee Revill). Siblings were Elizabeth, Myra, Thomas, George, Hannah, Harriett, Lilian, Eric, Smith and William Henry. In 1901 the family lived at Golden Valley and by 1911 had moved to Albert Avenue, at which time John was employed as a coal miner/hewer. He married Ada Bailey at St. Mary’s, Westwood in July 1914 on the same day his elder sister Myra married Joshua Hill.

We have not been able to obtain any information regarding John’s military service. There is also a T. Butler on the Jacksdale Memorial listed as served which could be his brother Thomas.

John later lived at 41, Sedgwick Street, Jacksdale. He was buried at St. Mary’s, Westwood in 1961 aged 68, his widow Ada survived until the age of 93 and was buried with him in 1984.

Further information would be welcome.
