Sapper Benjamin Bishop
283629, WR/274036 Royal Engineers
Benjamin was born about 1881 in Handsworth, Staffs, son of Josiah & Mary Bishop (nee Bache). He had brothers and sisters named Joseph, William, Harry, Laura, Emma, Catherine & Alfred.
In 1901 Benjamin was lodging in Nottingham, occupation given as railway porter and in 1911 he was living at the home of Joseph Mott in Platt Street, Pinxton, occupation given as railway platelayer.
It is possible but not confirmed that Benjamin married Sarah Wilson in 1919 and that they had a son named Morris in 1926.
The 1918/19 Absent Voters Roll indicates that Benjamin Bishop was an absent resident from Pye Hill Cottages, Jacksdale.
Benjamin was awarded the Victory and British War Medals and it should also be noted that Benjamin’s second regimental number prefix of “WR” indicates that he was working for the Waterways and Railways Section of the Royal Engineers.
