Private John Tissington Barker
386677 Army Service Corps, Remounts
No photograph. Can you help?
John “Thomas” Barker is shown on the ‘Absent Voters List 1918/19’ as being absent from Sedgwick Street, Jacksdale but is listed on his birth records and 1901 Census as John Tissington Barker - Tissington being his mother’s maiden name.
We have been told he was married to Annie (possibly Annie Burnham in 1923) and they later moved to Pye Hill but we can not find any children of the marriage.
The 1901 census lists his father as Thomas born 1862, Ironville, a bricklayer ‘working on the iron master’s estate’ and his mother as Harriet (nee Tissington) born 1862, Ironville. The family was living at Sedgwick Street in both 1901 and 1911. John was born in 1900 in Jacksdale. He had a sister Eileen or Ellen born 1890, a brother Joseph born 1896 and another sister Gladys born 1898, all children born in Jacksdale.
His brother Joseph was killed in action and is listed on the Jacksdale War Memorial among the fallen.
It is possible that the family may have been related to F. Barker (served) but we have nothing to substantiate this.
Further information would be very welcome.
