Thomas was born at Westwood in 1884, the son of coal miner William and his wife Hannah Maria Astbury. In 1911 the family was living at Old Westwood, Palmerston Street and Thomas aged 16 was employed as a coal miner ganger.

After the war, in 1920, Thomas married Lily (nee Longdon) Green, the widow of James Ernest Green who was killed in action in 1918. Thomas and Lily had a son named Eric (born. 1922) who later served in WW2.

Thomas Astbury later lived at Laurel House, Sedgwick Street, Jacksdale. He worked at James Oakes and Co. Pipe Yard.

Thomas was awarded the Victory and the British War Medals.

He died in 1961.
