Joseph Henry Sheriston was born at Hyson Green, Nottingham in 1886, son of Henry & Esther Sheriston who moved to Selston around 1899 living at Woodbine Cottages, Hanstubbin, Selston. Joseph’s father, Henry was born in 1867 at Hyson Green and his mother was born in 1869 at Selston.  He was one of twelve or thirteen children, some of whom were, Jane b.1892, Hilda b. 1895, Emma b. 1899, Fanny, Bertha, Esther, Jennie, James (m. Maud Butlin), John b. 1897 and William b. 1900.  Joseph’s mother, Esther died in 1921, aged 51 and his father Henry died in July 1932, aged 65.  Much of the information we have about the Sheriston family has been gleaned from his father, Henry Sheriston’s Obituary published in a local newspaper in 1932, as follows:- 

“SELSTON SOLDIER’S DEATH – MR HENRY SHERISTON. 

The death took place on Sunday last of Mr Henry Sheriston of Woodbine Cottage, Selston, after six weeks illness during which he had been a patient in Nottingham General Hospital.  He met with an accident whilst alighting from a bus last September and never properly recovered.  He was 65 years of age and was a retired coal miner.  He came from Nottingham (where he was born) some 33 years ago (approx 1899) to live at Selston, and worked for Messrs. Oakes & Co for over 30 years. He was in the Army during the whole period of the war, but was on home service, being stationed for most part at Amble.  He had two sons in the war and lost his oldest ‘Harry’ in 1916.  He also lost his wife some 12 years ago (1920).  There is a large family of eight daughters, four sons and 21 grandchildren to mourn his death. 

He was always keenly interested in the R.A.O.B. Society and was one of the oldest knights of this order, being elected over 30 years ago, whilst he was a Primo for over 48 years, having been elected at the Hyson Green No 2. Branch.  When he came to Selston he joined the Diamond Jubilee Lodge at the Bull and Butcher Inn.  He was also interested in the British Legion and was a member of the Jacksdale Branch, and along with Mr George Bingham, was instrumental in forming the Selston ex-service men and old Comrades Social Club, of which he was the first president.  He was also the first secretary of the old Selston Excelsior Football Club, which was in existence over 20 years ago.  In all his work he was always most conscientious and thorough. 

He was interred in Selston Churchyard on Wednesday afternoon, the service being of a semi- military character, and was conducted by the Vicar (Rev. P. A. Sharp).  The mourners were: - Mr John Sheriston (Jacksdale) Mrs G Greaves (Mansfield) Mrs G Blythe (Jacksdale) Mrs J Peach (Rotherham) Mr W Sheriston (Jacksdale) Mr D Hodgkinson (Selston) Mrs H Martin (Codnor Park) Mr J Sheriston (Selston),Mr A Thornley (Pinxton) Miss D Sheriston (Selston) Miss J Sheriston (Selston) -  sons and daughters.  Master G Blythe and Miss A Blythe, grandchildren:  Mrs J Taylor and Mrs W Collings (Nottingham) sisters: Mr G Greaves, Mrs J Sheriston, Mrs G Blythe, Mrs W Sheriston, Mr J Peach, Mr D Hodgkinson, Mr H Martin, Mr A Thornle -  sons and daughters-in law.  Mrs A Wilkes and Mrs R Rogers (New Houghton), sisters-in-law; Mr Fred Hoggard (Selston) brother-in-law; Mr W Spencer:  Miss Butler: Mr & Mrs J Timms: Mr S Wharmby: Mr W Brogdale: Mrs P Hill: Mrs T Green. 

Members of the Jacksdale British Legion with their standard, the bearer being Mr CF Hill; the Jacksdale Social Club: the Diamond Jubilee Lodge of the R.AOB preceded the cortege, and at the graveside the brothers Taylor of Jacksdale sounded “The Last Post” and “Reveille” whilst Flanders Poppies were dropped on the grave by the Legion members and ivy leaves by the RAOB.  

Floral tributes were sent by:- Fanny, George and Grandsons; Jennie, George and Grandchildren; Hilda, Josiah and Children; Jack, Lizzie and Children; Emma, Dennis & Children; Jim, Dorothy and Jessie; Esther and Irene; William, Olive and Children; Esther, Harry and Children; Bertha, Amos & Children; Sisters Bertha and Jennie; Fred Hoggard and family; Mr & Mrs J Timms; Miss Butler; Mr and Mrs JW Wood and family; Mr RW Major (Jacksdale); Mr and Mrs Percy Hill (Westwood); members of Jacksdale British Legion; members of Jacksdale Social Club. The bearers were Messrs. George Bingham, William Hurt, Joseph Bond, Thomas Vann, William Smedley and Fred Barker.”

 A ‘Selston Roll of Honour’ published in a local newspaper in 1916, mentions Joseph Sheriston as follows:-

 “ The following are the names of the Selston men who have fallen in the service of their country and for whom a memorial service was conducted at the Parish Church, as mentioned last week:- 

Private Joseph Henry Sheritson, 19th R.A.M.C. Field Ambulance, killed in action, September 1916, aged 30 years.” 

The Commonwealth War Graves record Joseph’s date of death as the 25th October 1916.  He is buried at the Guillemont Road Cemetery, Guillemont, Somme, France.
