William Maxey was born in 1896, son of Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Maxey of Old Bagthorpe, who later moved to Alma Street, Selston. His parents were both born in 1875. He had two sisters, Violet b. 1898 and Elizabeth b. 1900.
The Sherwood Foresters Roll of Honour indicates that he enlisted at Mansfield, Notts. We also know that he died of his wounds. This is further supported by a 'Selston Roll of Honour' published in 1916, which mentions William as follows:-
"The following are the names of the Selston men who have fallen in the service of their country, and for whom a memorial service was conducted at the Parish Church as mentioned last week:-
Private William Maxey, 9th Sherwood Foresters, died of wounds, October 2nd, 1916, aged 21 years."
He is buried at Wimereux Communal Cemetery which contains 2,845 Commonwealth Burials of World War One, including Lt-Col John Macrae, author of the poem 'In Flanders Fields'. Boulogne and Wimereux formed important hospital centres from October 1914 for the duration of the war.
