Samuel Edward Lee was the eldest son of Samuel James and Jane Elizabeth Lee of The Square, Buxton's Hill, Selston.  The family later moved to Bridge House, Selston, Notts.  Both of his parents were born in 1861.  Samuel had brothers and sisters, Sarah b. 1889, Minnie b. 1893, Percy b. 1894, Arthur b. 1895, George b. 1897, Ada b. 1898 and Matthew b. 1900. 

A 'Selston Roll of Honour' published in 1916, mentions Samuel as follows:-

"The following are the names of the Selston men who have fallen in the service of their country, and for whom a memorial service was conducted at the Parish Church as mentioned last week:-

Private Samuel Edward Lee, 7th Leicesters, killed in action October 24th, 1915, aged 24 years".
