Samuel Kirk was born in 1896, son of William M. & Matilda Kirk of Poplar Terrace, Selston. The family later moved to Victoria Street, Portland Road, Selston. His father William was born in 1868 and his mother Matilda was born in 1872.
Samuel had two sisters and one brother:- Matilda b. 1899, Hannah b. 1893 and Thomas b. 1901.
He is buried near his home in St Helen's Churchyard, Selston and died only weeks before the Armistice on 23rd September 1918. We have no further information about the cause of his death or of his military career. Any information about this serviceman would be very welcome.
Cliff Brow, Chairman of the Cambridgeshire W.F.A. informs us that - "Samuel Kirk originally enlisted as 49253 Private S. Kirk in the Leicestershire Regiment (probably conscripted) and joined the Cambridgeshire's in the summer of 1918. Wounded on the 5th of September 1918 and died on the 23rd of September 1918."
