Arthur Keeling was born in 1894, son of Benjamin and Emily Keeling of Mexborough, Selston. He was baptisted at St Helen's Church on 4th November 1894, along with his sister, Lillian b. 1892. Arthur's father, Benjamin was born in 1870 and his mother Emily was born in 1871. He had two brothers, Eric, d.o.b. not known and Ben b. 1899 d.1901, aged 2. Arthur also had six sisters in all, Lillian mentioned above, Olive b. 1896, Doris b. 1900 and Elsie, Ida, and Grace.
The Sherwood Forester's Roll reveals that Arthur enlisted at Hucknall, Notts. He was killed in action by a sniper's bullet, only three week's before the Armistice, at the River Selle, France.
The Amerval Communal Cemetery
Extension was made after the 51st Brigade (17th Division) captured Amerval on
20th October 1918. There are more than 150 First World War casualties in
the site. 116572 Private John George Jepson of Jacksdale also of the 10th
Btn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) was killed on the same day,
during the same attack. Private Jepson is buried next to Private Keeling, in
grave A27.
Private Arthur Keeling is also commemorated on the Underwood Memorial.
