Thomas Edward Hawkins was born in Ripley, Derbyshire in 1894, son of Samuel & Emma Hawkins of Ash Cottage, New Selston, Nottinghamshire.

Bailleul was an important railhead, air depot and hospital centre and was corps headquarters until July 1917, when it was severely bombed and shelled. After the Battle of Bailleul (13th to 15th April 1918) it fell into German hands until August 1918. The Baileul Communal Cemetery Extension contains 4,403 Commonwealth burials.
