James William Gregory was born in 1890, son of Edward and Phoebe Gregory of Portland Road, Selston (1901).  By 1915 the family had moved to Victoria Road, Selston.  His father Edward was born in 1865 and his mother Phoebe in 1869.  James had one brother, Robert b. 1895 and two sisters, Clara b. 1897 and Louisa b. 1899.

James enlisted at Nottingham and was killed in the trenches at Mailley-Maillet, France.  

A local newspaper mentions James in an article written in 1916 entitled 'Selston Roll of Honour' as follows:-

"The following are the names of the Selston men who have fallen in the service of their country, and for whom a memorial service was conducted at the Parish Church, as mentioned last week :-

"Private James William Gregory, 9th Sherwood Foresters, killed in action, September 26th, 1916, aged 27 years.

(His date of birth indicates that he may actually have bee 26 years old at time of death).
