Harry Lyman Dove was born in 1895, son of William & Mary Ann Dove of Dove Green, Selston.  His father William, a colliery banks man was born in 1863 at Crich, Derbyshire. His mother Mary (nee Smith) was born in 1873.  Harry also had a sister named Mary, born 1901.  His maternal grandparents, James Smith b. 1833 and Harriett Smith b. 1835 also lived with the family at Dove Green.

A local newspaper mentions Harry in an article written in 1916 entitled 'Selston Roll of Honour' as follows:-

"The following are the names of the Selston men who have fallen in the service of their country, and for whom a memorial service was conducted at the Parish Church, as mentioned last week :-

" Private Harry Dove, Notts & Derbys, killed in action in France on February 13th 1915, aged 20 years."

(Discrepancies reported in the press of the day as to exact date of death are not uncommon).
