The above newspaper clipping has been sent to us by Trevor Field of Selston. Trevor found this newspaper clipping several years ago, under the floorboards of his home in Union Street, Selston, whilst installing central heating. Since then Trevor has kept it safe inside a copper kettle in his front room. Thanks go to Trevor for taking such good care of this little piece of local history.
Kenneth Clowes was the son of Arthur and Hilda Mary Clowes. We also believe he had two sisters, Mary and Margaret.
The campaign in Tunisia began on 8th November 1942. The Eight Army attack on the German position at Enfidaville on 19th April 1943 captured the village, but strong opposition meant they could make no further progress at that time. Attacks further North had greater success with Tunis falling on 7th May, Bizerta on 8th May and by the 11th May 1943, Enfidaville was surrounded and resistance ceased the next day. There are 1,551 burials in the Enfidaville Cemetery of which most died in these final battles from March to the beginning of May 1943.
