Charles Butcher was born in Staffordshire in 1895, the son of Charles and Lucy Jane Butcher of Hall Green, Selston, Notts.

He enlisted at Ashton-Under-Lyne, Lancashire.

Charles is buried in the Blighty Valley Cemetery, which was first used in July 1916, however, after the Armistice a further 784 graves, mostly of those who had fallen on 1st July 1916, were brought in from the battlefields.  Charles' grave may therefore have been one of those who were transferred to Blighty.
