We know very little about William Ball, except to say that census records indicate there was a William Ball who lived on the Portland Road, Selston and was born in 1881. If this is the same man, he would have been around 35 years old at time of death evidenced by the following report:-
A local newspaper mentions William in an article written in 1916 entitled 'Selston Roll of Honour' as follows:-
"The following are the names of the Selston men who have fallen in the service of their country, and for whom a memorial service was conducted at the Parish Church, as mentioned last week :-
"Private William Ball, 11th Sherwood Foresters, died of wounds October 7th, 1916, aged 35 years."
(Discrepancies as to exact date of death were not uncommon in publications of that time).
Further information would be welcomed.
