Archie Askin was born in 1893, son of Mr & Mrs John FP Askin of 'The Chestnuts', Butterley Hill, Ripley, Derbyshire. He was also the husband of Gladys Askin (nee Jepson) of Alma House, Selston, Notts.
The family are listed on the 1901 Census - place of residence - Butterley Hill, Ripley. The head of the household, John F. Askin aged 62 is a Tallow Candle Maker, originating from Sheffield, Yorkshire. Wife Gemma is aged 40. The children listed were all born in Wath, Yorkshire :- Charles A aged 13 working as a grocery assistant, Alice S aged 11, Jack A aged 10, Archie aged 7 and Edith May aged 2. Niece Gemma Capewell aged 10 is also in the house on census night.
Archie originally enlisted into the 7th Btn Sherwood Foresters and worked for Mr H.B. Stainsby of Ripley prior to the war.
A local newspaper mentions Archie in an article written in 1916 entitled 'Selston Roll of Honour' as follows:-
"The following are the names of the Selston men who have fallen in the service of their country, and for whom a memorial service was conducted at the Parish Church, as mentioned last week :-
A number of casualties are listed and then continues ....
"To this list can be added the name of Private Archie Askin, of the 7th Sherwood Foresters, subsequently transferred to the Royal Warwickshires, who died from wounds in hospital in France on November 22nd. His photograph and fuller particulars will be published in our next issue. Private A. Askin had been married only a few months to Miss Gladys Jepson, of Alma House, previous to which he resided at Ripley and worked for Mr H B Stainsby of that town."
Private Askin is buried at Etretat Churchyard, Seine Maritime, France.
