From the Eastwood and Kimberley Advertiser:

BRINSLEY SOLDIER KILLED IN ACTION

Another Brinsley soldier to make the supreme sacrifice is Pte. Jerry Paxton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Paxton, of New Brinsley, who has fallen in the severe fighting on the Somme.  On Saturday morning the family received intimation of their son’s death from his companion, and by Monday morning’s post the information was confirmed by an official document from the Regimental Headquarters, the date of his death being recorded as Oct. 5th.  Pte. Jerry Paxton having volunteered for service in the early days of the war was called up on January 18th, 1915, and has seen a good deal of fighting on the Western front.  He was wounded in the shoulder and hand on Sept. 6th, being at that time engaged in the fighting around Armentieres, and was invalided home.  He returned to operations in France on Feb. 28th, and was killed in operations on the Somme.  Paxton was 26 years of age, and prior to joining the forces followed the occupation of a miner at Brinsley colliery.
