BRINSLEY NATIVE SUCCUMBS TO WOUNDS.
Official news has been received of the death of Private Cecil Gilbourne, a native of Brinsley, and Grandson of Mrs. Ann Gilbourne, of Co-operative House Old Brinsley, who migrated to Bentley some few years ago. He was gassed and wounded in Flanders, and succumbed to his injuries in a French Hospital on July 25th.
On
the outbreak of war he enlisted in the Yorkshire Dragoons, and was transferred
to the KOYLI and had been in France since November 1916.
The Doncaster Chronicle of 17th August 1917 also published the above account, entitled BENTLEY BOY DIES FROM WOUNDS. A memorial service was held at St. Peter's Church, in the Bentley area, when the vicar paid tribute to his memory, special reference being made of Cecil's devotedness to the church. The Dead March was played at the close of service.
