Herbert was under-manager at Pyehill Colliery and lived at Pyehill Cottages, later moving to Sedgwick Street and finally to Main Road, Jacksdale. His sister Elsie was married to Bert Bonsall, also listed on the Memorial as having served.

His son Ken was a well known local resident (moving to Leicestershire for the last few years of his life) renowned for his cricketing ability and long association with Pyehill Male Voice Choir.

Herbert was tragically killed underground at Pyehill Colliery, on the 17th September 1937 at the young age of only 43.
Herbert is buried at Westwood St. Mary's Church.
