George was born at Temple Normanton, Derby.  He married Ruth Paige on 1st March 1913 and lived at Sedgwick Street, Jacksdale where he appears on the 'Absent Voters List in 1918/19'. His occupation was a clay filler, most likely employer being James Oakes Clayworks. George attested on 10th December 1915 at Eastwood, Notts where he gave his age as 37 years and 9 months. George was quite a tall man for his day, being 6ft 1inches.  He was mobilised 25th January 1917 and was sent to France 27th July 1917 and remained there until his discharge on 16th February 1919.

He is listed on the Jacksdale War Memorial as G E Berrisford.

There is also a G Berrisford on the War Memorial listed as having served, who may also have been related. We have no details as yet to confirm this.

Kelly's Directory for 1916 and 1922 states that there was a Thomas Berrisford, Carter, of Westwood, who may also have been a relative. The 1904, 1908 and 1912 entries, states that he was a 'Wagonette Proprietor'.
